What the work involves

Plaster repair starts with the condition of the existing surface and the material supporting it. A fine crack in otherwise sound plaster is different from a loose or missing section. Repairs may need to retain a textured finish, an edge or a decorative detail as well as restore the damaged area.

Is the surface plaster, drywall or unknown?
Are there cracks, loose areas or missing sections? How large is the affected area?
Are there signs of dampness or an earlier repair?
Do texture, edges or decorative details need to be retained?

Can the damaged area be repaired?

Ask whether the damaged area can be repaired or whether a larger section needs work. A skim coat can smooth a sound surface, but it does not secure loose plaster or solve dampness.
